REMIDIAL Test for NARRATIVE Text


TEXT 1:    A long time ago, there was a kingdom in west java. The king was wise and kind- hearted. No wonder the kingdom was prosperous. Unfortunately, he had not had any children yet. The queen and the king were too sad, they were lonely. Furthermore, they were worried about who would be their successor.
       Wanting to have a child, the king went to the forest and prayed to God. God granted his wish. A few months later, the queen got pregnant.
       When the baby girl was born, people welcomed happily. They presented so many gift. Day by day, the princess grew more and more beautiful. The queen and king spoiled her too much. It made the princess had a bad temper.
      Before her seventeenth birthday, many people gave her beautiful present. The king took some gold and jewels. He asked the goldsmith to make a beautiful necklace for the princess.
     On the princess birthday, people gathered in the counrty-yard. Cheers grew louder and louder when the king, queen, and princess appeared.
     “ My beloved daughter, i give this necklace to you. People in the kingdom love you so much, it is a gift from them.” Said the king while presenting the necklace. The princess looked at it briefly,’ i don’t want it, it’s ugly’” she answered. Then She threw it away.
       Everybody was speechless. Nobody could say anything. They didn’t believe that the princess would do such a cruel thing to hurt everybody’s feelings. the queen and the people were sad, they began crying, then there was a miracle. The earth was crying too. Suddenly the spring enmerged from the ground. The water drowned all over the kingdom to be a lake.
       People called the lake” Telaga Warna”. On a bright day, it is full of colors. The colors come from the shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. However, some people said the shadows are from the pieces of princess neclace which are scattered at bottom of the lake.

THE MAGIC CANDLE
One day a young wanderer got lost in a wood. Suddenly he saw a light from an old hut. He knocked on the door, and an old woman opened it. She was crying. She said that the devil had stolen her magic candle. The candle could grant anything she asked. The wanderer asked her where the devil lived. “In the castle not far from here,” said the old woman.
           The wanderer went to the castle. There he found the devil, but he was old and weak. Therefore, when the wanderer grabbed the magic candle from the devil’s table and ran way, he couldn’t chase him.
           But the wanderer was not a kind man. He didn’t return the candle to the old woman, but kept it for himself. He lit the candle and made a wish.” I want to go far away from here”. Suddenly the gin appeared and took him to a beautiful palace. There was party in the palace. The wanderer wanted to make some money, so he lit the candle again and wished for some jewelry. He sold them to guests and soon making a lot of money. Then the princess came to buy the jewelry, but there was nothing left. The wanderer fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. The kind princess said yes, and they got married the next day. In his happiness, the wanderer told her princess about his adventure and the magic candle. Hearing that, the princess got very angry. At night she lit the candle and wished that the wanderer disappeared.
           In the morning the wanderer awoke and found himself back in his ugly house in the village.

Text 3 :       The tiger and the fox
        A tiger  caught fox while hunting for food. The fox was very bold, and so he said,” I am the king of the forest.” But the tiger grew very angry and said that he would eat the fox at once.
       “ If you don’t believe me, come for a walk with me,” answered the fox quite calmly. “ You’ll soon see whether all the other animals are afraid of me or not”.
       The tiger agreed to go with the fox. When all the animals saw them coming , they ran away as fast as they could. The tiger never found out that the animals were actually frightened of him, not of the fox.

Text 4 :
The Miserly Beggar
       The king was to pass by a beggar’s hut and the man was beside himself with excitement, not because he was about to see the king but because the king was known to part with expensive jewels and huge sums of money when moved by compassion.
        He saw the king’s chariot just as a kindly man was filling his begging bowl with uncooked rice.
        Pushing the man aside, he ran into the street, shouting praises of the king and the royal family.
        The chariot stopped and the king beckoned to the beggar.
       “Who are you?” he asked
      “ One of the most unfortunate of your subject”’ said the beggar. “ Poverty sits on my doorstep and follows me about like a dog. I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon.!”
      “Have you got nothing for  your king, except a tale of woe? “Said the ruler, putting out his hand. “Give me something”.
         The miserly beggar, astonished, carefully picked up 5 grains of rice from his bowl and laid them on the king’s outstretched palm.
         The king drove away. The beggar’s disappointment was great. He raved and ranted, and cursed the king again and again for his miserliness. Finally, his anger spent , he went on his rounds.
        When he returned home in the evening, he found a bag of rice on the floor.
       “Some generous soul has been here,” he thought and took out a handful of rice from the bag. To his astonishment there was a small piece of gold in it. He realized then that the bag had been sent by the king. He emptied the rice on the floor, feeling sure  there would be more gold pieces in it, and he was right. He found 5, one for each grain of rice he had given the king.
       “ It’s not the king who has been miserly,” thought the man, sadly. “If I had been generous and given him the whole bowl of rice, I would have been a rich man today”.

One day a fox was out walking when suddenly he heard a loud snapping noise and felt a sharp pain in his rear. “Ooooow!!!” howled the fox, tears coming to his eyes. “That hurts, Ooooow!!!! The fox looked behind him and saw his tail was caught in a trap. He struggled and struggled to get free but his tail was firmly stuck in the jaws of the trap. With one last frantic effort the fox used all his strength and broke free.
      “Oooow!!!!” howled the fox as he looked behind him and saw his tail still stuck in the trap. All he had left was a little stump on his backside. “My tail, my beautiful fluffy tail. What will I do?” he cried. “ How will I face all the other foxes without my beautiful tail? It will be so embarrassing “ the fox thought and thought and finally came up with a plan.
      He called all the other foxes together for a meeting. When the other foxes saw the little stump on his backside they began to laugh. “I’ve cut off my tail on purpose and I want you all to do the same.” He yelled over the laughter. “A large tail is more trouble than its worth,” he shouted. “When we’re being chased by dogs it gets in the way, and when we get together for a talk you never know what to do with it. Do you wrap it around your feet, do you sit on it, or do you leave it out for someone to trip over?” asked the fox. “So now is the time to free yourself from your tail and join me in a tailless society.” One of the older foxes shook his head and said,” you wouldn’t be saying that if you still had beautiful tail. You’re only saying that out of your own self interest and because you’re embarrassed.” All the other foxes walked off laughing with their big bushy tails proudly pointing upwards.
